Is Black Ops II Call of Duty?

Fri May 04, 2012 7:40 am

So, I recently made this thread with various Black Ops II info, and if you read any of it Treyarch is making some very drastic changes to pretty much every aspect the game. This brings up the question... Is Black Ops II really even a Call of Duty game?
If you look at the changes they're making to the Campaign, to Zombies, and the MAYBE leaked changes they've made to the Multiplayer this honestly doesn't feel like Call of Duty at all to me. Which I personally think is great.

In my opinion Call of Duty is pretty much defined by the Modern Warfare trilogy these days. When I think Call of Duty, that's pretty much where my mind takes me. I don't think Treyarch, I don't think Zombies. Even though Treyarch has made some popular Call of Duty games I just don't go to them when I think "What is Call of Duty?"
Treyarch really started to show they wanted to be different than Infinity Ward and push what Call of Duty COULD be with Black Ops, and is continuing to push that with Black Ops II. They're making a lot of serious changes to the series that just sets them in a completely different league than Infinity Ward, and I have a lot of respect for them because of that.

Going back on topic though... Black Ops II just does not feel like Call of Duty at all to me. The campaign is being completely redone, Zombies has never felt like a real Call of Duty mode to me, and from the little they've talked about the multiplayer I'm already getting a feeling that it just is not the same. Of course I can't really confirm that last part... But if you look at how different Modern Warfare 2/2.1 are from Black Ops I'm pretty sure Black Ops II will be completely different.

So what do you think? Is Black Ops II Call of Duty?
And to follow that up, do you think it's good or bad that it does/doesn't feel like Call of Duty?
(Please try to be constructive with your responses... I've been frustrated enough lately as it is, I don't need you guys trolling me even more than usual.)
You just read this incredibly tiny text for no good reason, and have nothing to show for it.

Maybe as much Cod as Halo 4 will be Halo. Founded on the old standarts and still very different.

You say CoD is defined by the modern warfare series but maybe it is exactly that way, before CoD 4 MW they were just second World War shooter wich there are enough already. And witch CoD 4 they created something newer.New weapons,Killstreaks, perks etc. .
Maybe with Halo 6 people will define Halo with the new trilogy and the other trilogy is just old school, who knows.
I personally liked Cod4 because it was a change from halo but still didn't played it that much.WaW and MW2 was kinda too much for me so I didn't even bother buying black ops and MW3.
To your main question, I think they're not gonna change much on the CoD concept just because it works so good and even with a repetetive story and overloaded multyplayer they gonna sell alot :)

I agree with you in that Black Ops is different from Modern Warfare but Black Ops looks vastly different from that series. If the words "Call of Duty" were absent from the trailer I could swear it was going to be a new FPS.

However I wonder if other games influenced this decision with Battlefield 3, Halo 4 and the new Ghost Recon all bringing new elements to FPS's forcing them to make changes. I'm glad to see them being innovative for a change but I'll need to see more regarding the game before I can say much more.

Zombies mode is great though :D

I try not to get too hyped for the CoD games these days. I remember analyzing MW2 teasers and speculating a lot on the Infinity Ward forums, and MW2 turned out to be my least favorite in the series. But it is good to hear that they are changing it up some. I like what Treyarch did with the first Blops and look forward to what they have in store for the second. MW3 was a backwards step imo.
