This actually took a lot of time to think about. I found myself restricted by pictures more than anything else. I think I'll make another post separately about characters I love.
For this, however, I've chosen Captain Benjamin Sisko of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Some may nod knowingly, assuming I'd choose Sisko as one of the stand-out black characters in Sci-Fi, but there are certain things about Sisko that I admire more than anything else. Specifically, I think Sisko fully embodies what I imagine a future New Orleanian to be. Some may not know that Sisko is from New Orleans, but beyond mentioning it, Sisko cooks his own food often. Additionally, he's a very spiritual man. He's also shown a lot of acceptance of other people, and also supported alternative lifestyles. It's hard to articulate fully, but he embodies to me what a black man in the future would be without it becoming obnoxious or racial.
In fact, I like Sisko so much that in high school I wrote my final essay arguing that Sisko actually graduated from my high school.
I have a deep admiration for his character and the depths the writers went to keep him grounded in reality.
