Mass Effect: Andromeda Choice Discussion (Spoilers)

Tue Apr 18, 2017 11:56 am

Now that people have either played the game or are moving along I'm going to start some conversations about choices in the game. I'll continue into a later game choice after a few days so people can talk about things and give others time to complete some things.

So, let's start with the first two big choices on Eos: What kind of outpost did you put down and why? How did you resolve the First Murderer mission?

I put down a science outpost because most of the people we brought with us are scientists and explorers and what's what we came to do. Also, we're messing with technology that's capable of altering planets and I think we should get our best minds working on understanding that. No militia is worth anything without a fleet to transport them and food to feed them, so we need to get working on living in Andromeda first.

For the murderer, I exiled him. He fully intended to kill his best friend and superior officer. If he thought he had to remove him to save the squad, he's the second in command. Take command. Rally the troops. Save people. No, instead he tries to murder his best friend. That's not okay, and that kind of person cannot remain an active part of our society.

What did the rest of you decide?

I haven't dealt with the murderer so, i'll try not to read that stuff.

I did science, because nerds! I had the same thinking as sarge, can't have an army without basic supplies for living.

What kind of outpost did you put down and why?
Spoiler: show
I established a science outpost. We need to figure out how to survive on these planets, and a science outpost is the most efficient way to get that information. I was a little worried about the nearby Kett but apparently Ryder's squad can just walk in and destroy an entire kett castle in 30 minutes so that turned out to be a non-issue.

How did you resolve the First Murderer mission?
Spoiler: show
Exile. Dude fully intended to kill his commander, and for all intents and purposes believed he had succeeded.
I messed with Duce and got banned. laugh at my expense...

I also did the science for pretty much the same reason. We're colonists, not some sort of invading army, and one of the later loyalty missions really hit home for me on that (although that may have been a specific cutscene/voice over based on that choice)

And exile for me as well. The hell,
Spoiler: show
"I tried to kill him but missed so I'm innocent"
-- how does that work?

Spoiler: show
My first station was science, and I did this for varying reasons. Logically, we'd need to advance our sustainability and even if there was a military outpost, an army marches on its stomach.

I also went the way of science because I did not want our science people to cower in the way of adversity like they were some commodity that needed only to be used when things were "safe"
.

Spoiler: show
I exiled the prisoner in the First Murderer Quest after a great deal of turmoil and philisophical thoughts on culpability. It boiled down to guilt due to intent and I harkened back to what happens in police stings involving murder for hire. No one dies in those scenarios, but they are guilty of at least conspiracy to commit murder.

So when the action has been commited, even if the party failed at doing it, they were indeed at the conclusion they wished to occur.

Regarding the Outpost:
Spoiler: show
Debated this with myself since the previous outposts failed and that we had established that there were hostile threats. If it hadn't of been for the Nexus uprising I would of went with a military outpost over science but as the Nexus was in bad shape, arks were missing and the general feeling of uneasiness with the heavy handed approach to the Nexus situation I went with Science. We needed people to know that we're not under military rule and that we came here for exploration and that we urgently needed scientific advancement to sustain the Nexus population.

In Short: Science Outpost

Regarding the Murder:
Spoiler: show
The intent was there for him to kill him but given the circumstances surrounding it, I freed him. Then he put himself back into Stasis as he said his life was unlivable and that his wife left him. I didn't like the option of exiling him which at the time felt like certain death and almost like capital punishment and I didn't want to set that precedent.

Oh boy here goes:

EOS:
Spoiler: show
Science outpost for sure, because i am pretty sure that had the kett and angaraan not been there that is the way it would have been. Like everyone else said, we need science to learn how best to survive and live on these new worlds

Murderer:
Spoiler: show
I really can not remember what i did. i would probably not exile him though. by the letter of the law he really wasn't guilty of actual murder. He may have wanted to commit the crime at that moment. in what was a very desperate moment. shoot his best friend and save the team or keep going and all die.

OUTpoST:
Spoiler: show
I chose the science option. I didn't want us to be seen arriving in a new galaxy, and setting up military installations right away.

FIrst Murder!! yay!
Spoiler: show
I did not exile him. I did as X did. I chose this because he technically didn't commit the murder, and I thought it would be important to follow the laws by the letter. Otherwise, it would show that its ok to bend the laws a little to suit your needs, and thus give way to dictators. Plus, I didn't think it likely that he was a risk for a repeat offense if he remained with the Nexus. However, if exiled, he may cause problems. he was kind of a dick, though. So he can go be imprisoned in a stasis pod instead of living a free life full of adventure as an exile.

OUTPOST:
Spoiler: show
I am making all the decisions as I would have made them, rather than playing an specific role playing type. As such, I chose the science outpost, as that is the purpose of the Nexus.

MURDERER:
Spoiler: show
I exiled him, he might not have landed the shot, but he fully intended to kill him. He lied about and didn't even show remorse about it.

If I let him go, he could attempt to do it again because he didn't like how things are going later on.

Next questions!

When interacting with the asari reporter, Kerri, how are you all engaging with her? Are you painting a clear picture of the struggles and facts of what's happening, or are you trying to keep the messaging inspirational and softening the harsh edges of the brutal reality?

Which planet did you go to after meeting the Angara and why?

Kerri, Asari Reporter, Saying of Truth and Things
Spoiler: show
I generally opted to paint a slightly more truthful picture. The lines were usually realistic, but pushing for hope. Basically saying "Yes, this is hard, but we're here together." I think this is an important reality to confront our people with, especially those fresh out of cryo and think things are going to be easy-breezy.

Galactic Tourist: Havarl or Voeld
Spoiler: show
While Voeld was an important strategic planet I felt like the Angaran people would be more receptive of our assistance (something Jaal hinted at by mentioning their significance to him as well) if we went to Havarl first and rescued their scientists.

The Asari Reporter:
Spoiler: show
Tried to keep thing realistic because it is a harsh Galaxy that we have come to so people need to be aware of all the dangers.

Romance Kerri:
Spoiler: show
I also did it to get her into bed as a one night stand while going after Vetra.

Galactic Tourist:
Spoiler: show
Voled baby love ice planets have being a fan after Noveria in Mass Effect 1 and there something peaceful about going to an ice world and looking at the background. I thing it has something to do with the snow it send you to a different place

Seeing as I'm a little late to this coversation I'll answer the previous questions in this post as well.

First outpost
Spoiler: show
I did a science outpost because we are explorers first and foremost not invaders so better understanding our new home and not posing a immediate threat was a priority.

First murderer
Spoiler: show
I freed him as no actual crime was committed and exile seemed to harsh a punisment for someone who is innocent.

Kerri's interviews
Spoiler: show
I've gone for brutal honesty because I'd rather everyone know what is going on in the galaxy the good and the bad, especially the Angara because if something damaging were to come out that we tried to hide it would ruin our relations with them.

Havarl or Voeld
Spoiler: show
I chose to go to Havarl first even though Voeld is more important tactically for the Angara I thought helping there ancestral homeworld would earn me more brownie points.

INTERVIEW
Spoiler: show
I have only had on question from Kerri, and I didn't feel like setting a precedent yet, so... I answered her in a manner that would have made Director Tan "happy". That being said, pending her future questions, I would be open (not afraid) to answer her questions without any censors

HAVARL or VOELD
Spoiler: show
Continuing with my decision of going for science first, I decided to go to Havarl first. Which I feel it has paid off so far, as I discovered part of the crew for the Ark Natanus (Turians)

I'm not done yet, so we shall see...
