Most Impactful Video Games for You.

Thu Feb 11, 2016 12:40 pm

Ok, what are the most impactful games you have played? Not necessarily your favorite games, but the ones you believe to have had a great impact on the gamer you are today.

Now I know that often there's way too many to select from, so I decided to let everyone organize them by console generation (pc players can just put them in the general date brackets)

Try to limit them to the top five in each category. Also portables I suppose can also be distinguished as well.

Gen 1: Magnavox Odyssey, Coleco

Gen 2: Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision

Gen 3: NES, Master System, Atari 7800

Gen 4: SNES, Sega Genesis [Gameboy, Gamegear]

Gen 5: N64, Sega Saturn, PS [Gameboy Color]

Gen 6: Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox [Gameboy Advance]

Gen 7: Wii, PS3, Xbox360 [Nintendo DS, PSP]

Gen 8: WiiU, PS4, Xbox One [3DS, PS Vita]

Red Alert: Retaliation
Pokemon Silver
Age of Mythology
Red Alert 2
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo Reach
League of Legends
Halo 5

The death of Westwood Studios is honestly probably the only reason I ever even tried an FPS. I was quite content with my Turn Based Strategy RPGS and Real Time Strategy war games. In every game I've ever played since my early development as an RTS player, I've saught out the largest team playlist in the game, where I can almost play the game like an RTS, Thinking about spawn points, movement, and unit match ups.

Halo 3 is where I met the Wheelmen, and stopped being evil(for the most part).

Halo Reach taught me what being a member of a real, competitive team was all about. I'd never been able to really fully trust my teammates until then.

League of Legends really taught me a lot about knowing your role, the importance of roles on a map and on a team, and how to improve and focus on yourself, no matter how badly your team is losing. (cant pick your teammates, YOU are the only constant factor in every single game you lose)

Halo 5 is where we're at. I'm here thanks to being called in by Sarge, #WeBack
If you think we're a rolling double kill.. come get it.

Gen 5 - Super Mario 64 and Pokemon Red were the first two games I ever played, so that's where it started for me. Both games are sort of classic now.

Gen 6 - The generation that I spent most of my time playing games in during the younger part of my childhood, I had a Gamecube and a PS2 but no Xbox as a kid. Got to play many great games like the Kingdom Hearts series and the Ratchet and Clank series. The Star Wars battlefront series was a favorite of mine too, not to mention Super Smash brothers. Honorable mention goes to the Soul Calibur series to round out the five.

Gen 7 - Halo was my bread and butter this generation, no contest. Other than that Call of Duty was huge during this time, Gears of War was really neat and Mass Effect was my rpg of choice for this gen. Going to throw in Borderlands for being a surprisingly great game and having a refreshing sense of style to it.

PC - Runescape was huge for me as a kid; my first real mmo were I learn how to deal with people. League of Legends is a massive phenomenon that's drawn me in and keeps drawing me back like many others. Counter-Strike is the definitive PC shooter, not much else to say. Hearthstone is cool because it's an online card game so it scratches that itch without having to have physical cards (which can be a turn off too). Recently got into WoW and I really like the lore of the Warcraft universe.

Gen 4: Super Mario World (2nd game I ever completed

Gen 5: Metal Gear Solid: No amount of words could write how I feel about this game. It in my opinion was a true masterpiece. Never have I cared for a story in a game more than this 1 (Also the first game I ever completed). Doom scarred me at this time in my life but now imm a life long fan.

Gen 6: Mech Assault: Before this my only real interaction with online gaming was playing Quake and Unreal Tournament on my Dads PC. This 1 of my first Clan experiences and also 1st online competitive game I've ever played. How I make callouts is because of my experience with this game.

Gen 7: Do yall need to ask? HALO MUTHAF**kin 3!!!! my frist real attempt at being a competitive gamer and definitely the cause for decision to take the gamer life as a whole. Everything be4 this was mostly casual play. Also the reason I know and love you guys. (3rd game I ever completed)

Gen 8: Currently nothing holds my attention like I want it too. ESO and Destiny are fun grinding experiences but I kno once I reach the top of my strengh I will either start over (ESO) or give up once I see the Top (Destiny). Halo 5 is enjoyable but I dont give it enough time :( . but no worries that will change.

Gen 3:
1. Super Mario Bros. 3- quite possibly the pinnacle Mario experience. It wasn't my first, but damn did I enjoy every minute.
2. Tecmo Super Bowl- back in the days when I actually cared a bit about football, this was so fun to play, the music really helped out.
3. Castlevania 2- not the most popular game in the series, but man did I play the crap out of this game (it was one of the few we had)
4. Super Mario Bros.- nothing else need be said.
5. Blades of Steel

Gen 4: I didn't actually play a lot of SNES, but later player games remade or re-released on the GBA. I did however play the hell out of my gameboy.
1. Zelda: Link's Awakening- my first feels experience with a game.
2. Final Fantasy IV- I am forever in love with its story
3. Super Mario Land- as simple as it was, it still resonates with me.
4.. A Link to the Past- I played this nearly ten years after its original release, but damn was it epic.
5. Pokemon Yellow- played the hell out of it after getting into Pokemon Gold

Gen 5: Finally upgraded my console and got myself an N64. The gameboy color was a great addition as well.
1. Starfox 64- I know my way around an Arwing forever. This may also be the reason why I play inverted in FPSs as well.
2. Zelda Majora's Mask/Ocarina of Time- the music, my God the music.
3. Paper Mario- My first experience with an RPG
4. Banjo-Kazooie- crude humor and a very well designed game. I memorized the crap out of it.
5. Mario 64- good grief, it was so haunting to play this game. No lies, the music from Dire Dire Docks still hits me right in the feels
Special Mention to Pokemon Gold for being the best pokemon game I ever played.

Gen 6: Owned a gamecube, gba, and through fate the Xbox
1. Paper Mario and the Thousand Year door- Its the reason I still love Nintendo
2. Tales of Symphonia- only one in the series I've played, but damn was it compelling.
3. Halo2(then ce)- If it weren't for a very odd turn in fate, I might not have ever played this and have ever been interested in FPSs
4.Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls- I have no Idea why I hadn't played any Final Fantasy games, but I'm glad it was the first in the series that got me to keep interest and later play FFIV on the GBA
5. Super Smash Bros- I fell in love with the game on the N64, but this is where I developed an infatuation with the series.
special mentions- Metriod Prime and Twilight Princess

Gen 7: Xbox 360, DS, PSP, and Wii
1. Halo 3/ODST: Where I honed my FPS skills
2. Oblivion/Skyrim- many a hour was spent munchkining these games.
3. Pokemon Heartgold
4. Halo Reach- where I learned that I had to say goodbye "There will be another time..."

Gen 8:
Halo 5
Pokemon X- totally renewed my interest in the franchise.
We shall se what else comes of this era

I've been playing for a while started on Atari and grew from there. My games were simple I played. With brothers and a sister time was limited till it was me and my little brother left.

I played football alot. I mean a lot. I played every Madden from 1991 till 2005. I took breaks to play Grand Turismo and Forenza to tear the pavement and let the grass grow for football season to start again. I actually bought Halo before I had a Xbox because it looked interesting. I played with my older brother and his friends on Fridays alot. The days of bring your tv and Xbox so we can all play were some fun times.

I reserved the collector edition Halo 2 and took vacation that week to play it. I played it till football season started again. As it was time to raise kids and figure life out my wife suggested I game more to relieve stress. Football wasn't cutting it so she got me a ps3 and battlefield 2. After that I was hooked on shooters. I played BF3, Homefront, BF4, and Destiny.

I got my Xbox1 a year ago with the Halo MCC. I wanted to complete the saga. I couldn't stop Destiny but Spartan 117 pulled me back in. With release of Halo 5 there was no going back. I do play other games here and there but I just can't stop this competitive spirit to get the "W".

Gen 1: Not that old at 22.

Gen 2: Punchout and duck hunt, both great games that the older brothers and I would play all the time. (not sure if this is gen 2 or 3 however.)

Gen 3: Mario (same gen as aforementioned, however wanted something for most columns)

Gen 4: Gameboy was my first real gaming system to my own. I played a lot of pokemon Blue and Yellow, along with Zelda games. Never quite beat zelda, but Pokemon was beat continuously (still is).

Gen 5: Mario Kart without a doubt. I played that with my little brother all the time, great game that I have now found a way to make into an adult game. Beyond this I played Super Mario and other basic games like Ocarina of Time on this console.

Gen 6: For Gamecube: Super Smash Bros. Kirby was my boy, loved that pink critter. For Xbox, Halo 2 was where I started, didn't play much of Halo CE, but Halo 2 we would LAN with 4-8 of us and game all night with my older brothers. That was when Halo became fun for me.

Gen 7: Halo 3: This is where I started into BTB which somehow led me all these years later back into the hands of the Wheelmen, a timeless classic.
Fable was a fantastic game. I loved the story and the choices you could make while simultaneously acquiring Light and Dark armor (things I miss in the new fables).
Also Oblivion. My brother bought this, and I fired it up one day to get lost in the immersion and the hack and smash in that game. I spent many games immediately going into the Arena just to get my warrior started. Never got old.
Fallout 3. I got this game super late into the 360's life span, but it was amazing, never looked back.
Finally Forza. Just enjoyed this racing game that was unlike any other to me.

Gen 8: I am currently grasping the game halo 5 as I type this. Beyond that I've got Far cry 4, Forza 5, and Fallout 4 that all keep me entertained. Great series that I have played many from some of the beginning points.

PC: Roller Coaster Tycoon and Warcraft III. These guys get love even after a decade on the market. Always good for a little nostalgia.
