I was at PAX. I spent a very large amount of time at the Halofest portion of it, and much of THAT time playing lots of Reach. Lots and lots of Title Updated Reach. I am still recovering from the whole PAX weekend, and played many games in loud rooms against randoms and never being able to do callouts with teammates. Also I kept getting achivements. Whoops.
So take all I'm about to say as only my opinion.
THE MAPS:
The Timberland remake: Only available as BTB. When filled with randoms whoever ran the ghost got most of the kills as without teamfire that thing is a splatter machine. A good hog team and ground pounders on top of hills would destroy on that map. Really nice cover but still a large enough map to make a hog reasonable. I found it a lot of fun to play on, but visually looked like a lot of Forgeworld maps which turned some people off.
The Damnation remake: Ice and snow everywhere give it a unique look but might make callouts difficult just from visual cues. Really tight corridors and one big open center area ment everyone either was camping corners or jetpacking up the middle. A good pistol or DMR usually won the day, and as most cases height was the most important advantage.
The Prisoner remake: Lots of really long sightlines, a snipers dream. Getting the sniper is a bit of a challenge when faced with a well organized team. The covenant setting has a lot of flare and style. Teleporters are camp fests.
The Beaver Creek/Battle Creek remake: Looks and plays VERY similar to Halo 2 Beaver Creek. Visuals are almost identical, but much more rich. A few small changes...there are symetrical paths leading from OS or Invis out back and around to the corresponding side ramps leading to sniper, so more options for people goin down low to go for those powerups. Also there are grav lifts to offer not just a third way to get on top of the bases but from the BACK of the base. Weapons are mostly the same but there is a grenade launcher on the top of each base.
Installation 04 - It's the new map, based on a few outdoor campaign settings, specifically for Firefight. A smaller map, one forerunner structure in the middle that would be flanked by dropships. At the event there were 2 AI ODSTs on the base that would basically protect the top of the base. Pretty map.
THE TITLE UPDATE:
I played with a variety of new settings, from full title update to just some things changed. If I let my personal feelings get in the way of being objective I'm not liking a lot of the changes. I've learned how to time my shots effectively and use crouch to steady my aim. Without bloom that is useless and spammers win. I feel that the criticism of bloom = spammers win will be proven false when the bloom is removed, as now spammers ALWAYS win as it's only about speed instead of smarts.
Honestly it really only affects the DMR. Lower caliber weapons (pistol and AR) were spam weapons to begin with where shot timing isn't as important. Higher cadliber weapons (snipers) you can't fire faster then the bloom retracts and thus no timing is changed.
Movement speed is different, a bit slower and in some cases actually felt sluggish. I didn't feel any changes to grenades though many are detailed. Also Armor Lock was no different, though I never actually played with it. I did see someone armor lock to remove a sticky, however it might not have been a game with full title update.
The hog felt exactly the same, both gunning and driving. However I'm a ground pounder so take that as you will.
In the end it's going to become a playstyle preference. Like those who prefer to play MLG or SWAT to "vanilla" matchmaking, people will prefer a classic or updated playstyle. And it sounds like there will be playlists for both. The most important thing if you really care about the changes is to get the maps so you can play in the Beta. There was a HUGE push to tell people to play the beta and voice their opinions on the Waypoint forums of what you like and why. There were cards at every station reminding people about it, and every panel I saw made that clear.
And with that....collapse time...
