Simply Stupid Fun Books

Wed Jul 13, 2016 9:04 am

Listening to Sarge read last night, I had a thought about posting some of my favorite purely fun books. I have Kindle Unlimited, and while there are some gems in there, there's also a huge amount of books that are just stupid amounts of fun (and not because of high humor):

Caverns & Creatures Series:

A group of slacker friends end up being trapped in the D&D game they are playing, transformed into the race/class they are rolled, with the same spells, abilities, and limitations of their level 1 characters. Totally vile half-orc related humor ensues.

Hard Luck Hank:

Hank is a mutant with a pretty useless mutation -- he's close to indestructible, but every time he is hurt, his body becomes denser. After he begins to weigh close to a ton, his reflexes really start to take a beating. But through it all, most of the books are about how Hank really doesn't give much of a shit about anything.

Magic 2.0:

Computer nerds discover an interface to the workings behind the universe. So what do they do? Create a shell interface that allows them to simulate magic to wow the locals. Fun Fun Fun.

I have to fun to a meeting I forgot about, so I'll update the descriptions shortly, but in the meantime, feel free to check out the links, and borrow them using prime if the lending library stuff is still active. Also, if you have any other recommendations of these types of books, please add them below.

A group of us read/listened to the whole Magic 2.0 series. Ducke, Brick, Ivy, Elsa, and I loved it. I think the second book was the strongest of the trilogy. The third one irritated both Ducke and I, even though it was game related. Bad games are bothersome, even if they're the main plot device.

Oh dude, if we're gonna share Stupid, Fun books, I have to give a big shout-out to my man Sir Terry Prachett. He writes the Discworld series, and they are so magnificent and hard to describe that sometimes I think they're a whole new genre. It's like if Lord of the Rings met Monty Python in a contemporary philosophical satire fantasy world. I mean, holy crap, Terry Pratchett was knighted by the Queen for writing these books. And the best part? You don't actually have to read them in any order. I recommend that you don't read the first few books to start off with 'cause they're not his best works, but other than that, you can pick up any of the Discworld books and give it a go. My top recommendations are:

1. Monstrous Regiment -- War has come to Discworld ... again. And, to no one's great surprise, the conflict centers around the small, arrogantly fundamentalist duchy of Borogravia, which has long prided itself on its unrelenting aggressiveness. A year ago, Polly Perks's brother marched off to battle, and Polly's willing to resort to drastic measures to find him. So she cuts off her hair, dons masculine garb, and -- aided by a well-placed pair of socks -- sets out to join this man's army. Since a nation in such dire need of cannon fodder can't afford to be too picky, Polly is eagerly welcomed into the fighting fold—along with a vampire, a troll, an Igor, a religious fanatic, and two uncommonly close "friends." It would appear that Polly "Ozzer" Perks isn't the only grunt with a secret. But duty calls, the battlefield beckons. And now is the time for all good ... er ... "men" to come to the aid of their country.

2. Hogfather -- Who would want to harm Discworld's most beloved icon? Very few things are held sacred in this twisted, corrupt, heartless -- and oddly familiar -- universe, but the Hogfather is one of them. Yet here it is, Hogswatchnight, that most joyous and acquisitive of times, and the jolly old, red-suited gift-giver has vanished without a trace. And there's something shady going on involving an uncommonly psychotic member of the Assassins' Guild and certain representatives of Ankh-Morpork's rather extensive criminal element. Suddenly Discworld's entire myth system is unraveling at an alarming rate. Drastic measures must be taken, which is why Death himself is taking up the reins of the fat man's vacated sleigh . . . which, in turn, has Death's level-headed granddaughter, Susan, racing to unravel the nasty, humbuggian mess before the holiday season goes straight to hell and takes everyone along with it.

3. Going Postal -- Suddenly, condemned arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig found himself with a noose around his neck and dropping through a trapdoor into ... a government job? By all rights, Moist should be meeting his maker rather than being offered a position as Postmaster by Lord Vetinari, supreme ruler of Ankh-Morpork. Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may prove an impossible task, what with literally mountains of decades-old undelivered mail clogging every nook and cranny of the broken-down post office. Worse still, Moist could swear the mail is talking to him. Worst of all, it means taking on the gargantuan, greedy Grand Trunk clacks communication monopoly and its bloodthirsty piratical headman. But if the bold and undoable are what's called for, Moist's the man for the job -- to move the mail, continue breathing, get the girl, and specially deliver that invaluable commodity that every being, human or otherwise, requires: hope.

Oh how I love discworld. I have all but about 3 on my bookshelf, in the hopes my kids will read them. It's also the reason there will always be 2 z's in wizzard. :)

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH SOMEBODY ELSE IN THE HWM HAS READ DISCWORLD!!!

I'm still going through the series, I'm gonna pick up Unseen Academicals next! So happy I finally got into it <3 <3

Also, for the more anime-oriented members of HWM, I recommend you check out Space Dandy. It's the story about a dandy guy...in space. I swear, it's got way more emotional depth to it than you think, and the ending made me want to go back and rewatch the whole thing all over again to pick up on all the little clues I missed.

Lol, I had always assumed everyone had read discworld. :) There's even still a MUD running after 25 years. Now I'm going to have to take a break from my trashy scifi reading and reread Mort - the books with Death are my favorites. I keep meaning to watch Space Dandy, maybe I'll start when I finish this latest season of Orphan Black. :)

I'm surprised you didn't even mention what the discworld is even though you gave describtions to 3 books haha. It's a flat world carried by four elephants that standing on top of a giant turtle ( great A'tuin ) that is cruising through the space, while snapping after comets and the like.
There are all the fantasy figures you can you know and more on this world. just "simply pure fun". I read about 5 books so far of him, both uncles from my mothers side have all of the books so if I ever want to read more I know where to find them. One of them said that alot of these books are "a mirror of society" and I can partly confirm.
The Book which impressed me the most with this sentence in context was "Small Gods", a good thought what Religion and Gods are and how they come to be what they are and there consequences.

I assume most people here already read it or at least watched the Movie to "A hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy" written by DOUGLAS ADAMS, which is also considered "The Terry Pratchett of Sci-fi." I got recommended the whole series of it but I only read the first so far. 10/10 shit's great yo

other than those I don't think I have read much "pure fun books" like those. Magic 2.0 really sounds interesting though.

Also if you are interested there are actually three TV shows that are based of some of the Discworld books; The Hogfather, Going Postal and The Colour of Magic. All three are split into two episodes and are a great watch so if you want to do that before reading the books to ease yourself in that is a great avenue to take. I'm not sure if they were shown state wide as they were made by a rather small British production company.
