Scores/Soundtracks

Mon Feb 01, 2016 5:57 pm

We are all a musical lot and I know there are certainly a lot of us that like listening to the various scores of music from games, tv shows and films. We have a thread discussing various soundtracks and the songs we like from them, so I figured why not make one to share our love for the instrumentals?

First and foremost who are some of your favourite composers and what is some of their work you love the best? It goes without saying a lot of us are going to love the big names, perhaps my favourite is Hans Zimmer with John Williams close behind, but I also adore the works from John Powell, James Howard and Alen Menken.

I'm typing this up on my break so I will go more in depth when I have time, but tell us what some of your favourite tracks/scores are.

John Williams is hands-down the best in my opinion. Danny Elfman is a close second with Hanz Zimmer in third. Unfortunately, the more I listen to Zimmer, the more I get disappointed because he reuses his own bits too much. (Listen to music from Gladiator, then listen to Pirates of the Carribean for example )

Oooooo Danny Elfman is a good one, That Nightmare Before Christmas does have a great eerie soundtrack. I don't get disappointed with Zimmer, but I totally get where you are coming from. Gladiator is my favourite film and so I was pleasantly surprised when I first watched PoTC to hear the same melodies coming through but with a twist, which quickly made those films have some of my favourite scores. He did fall into that whole deep BWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMM War of the Worlds alien thing going on for a while which is super prominent in Inception (another one of my favourites).

As Kitty and Oboe both said the Bastion score is fantastic. The amount of Indie games out there with superb scores is quite surprising. Child of Light is another I find to be a joy listening too.

I also really enjoyed Ramin Djawadis work on Pacific Rim

then Iron Man before that. These are tracks that just make me feel like a badass.

I'm a huge Zimmer fan. Don't mind at all that some of his tracks sound very similar to others. For me, the music is about what it makes me feel, and Zimmer's stuff just does it for me. I'd put him above John Williams, because for me, Zimmer's music makes the movies better, whereas I feel that William's music is good because the movies were good. Sometimes I watch movies just because Hans Zimmer made the music.

Swift, I'm with you on the Pacific Rim soundtrack. Love it.

I'm gonna post here some of my favourites, from various composers.

This is one that you may not have heard/seen before. Lovely movie, amazing soundtrack. Beasts of the Southern Wild
Spoiler: show

Another one of my favourite movie/soundtrack combinations: The Last of the Mohicans
Spoiler: show

Here is some Clint Mansell that I really like, from the movie Moon.
Spoiler: show

Here's one by Yann Tierse from Amelié. This makes me wanna go play piano right now, but my finger is still messed up and its 2 in the morning :(
Spoiler: show

Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World has a great score. Its mostly classical music for violin and cello. Its great. This is one of my favourite movie ending scenes of all time.
Spoiler: show

I also love me some John Murphy. You may know his music from the 28 Days Later series. This one is from Sunshine.
Spoiler: show

This post is taking forever because I'm just listening to music now. I've got goosebumps, and am on the verge of tears....

I could post millions of Hans Zimmer tracks here, but I'll try to limit myself to [insert number]

Its hard to pick, but this may be my favourite of all.
Spoiler: show

Or maybe this one? Goosebumps every time.
Spoiler: show

I'm gonna stop there with Hans.

As far as video game soundtracks go, Halo has some really good ones. I also really like the Assassin's Creed series' music.

This is just one of them:

And Mass Effect

I'm gonna stop here. I've been writing this post for hours now. Kept remembering things and posting them so now I think there may be too many. Oh well.

I need to make a post but damn Cri! Never knew you were such a soundtrack fan! You picked some of my favourites... Sunshine, Last of The Mohicans, Master and Commander, The DaVinchi Code (and Angels and Demons really). I agree with you, I feel both composers write music for solid films but I just feel... Something with Zimmers music a bit more. Like inception is one of those films that I love but I can also just leave it on for the music. There are plenty of films I will watch just for the music.

I'm too lazy to post all this stuff, and a lot of you mentioned my favorites in film already. Inception soundtrack gives me chills without having to watch the movie.

For the gamez, some of my favorite game soundtracks are Risk of Rain and Bastion's soundtracks. Marty gave me goosebumps with the Halo soundtracks. Already mentioned, Jeremy Soule, is an amazing, outstanding, brilliant composer. I'm also a fan of Jesper Kyd - I liked his music in the Hitman games, and he's done a great job with other games too, such as Assassin's Creed and Borderlands. His music always stuck out to me for some reason.

I'm tired and I have work soon, I'll say more later. Kbye.

Jeremy Soule has done so much work on so many games but I mostly have his Skyrim works and some Guild Wars here and there.

What about Sam Hullick? Most notably Mass Effect (although he worked on all three with various other composers)
Spoiler: show
So you have these three that all have piano parts and are just amazing.

And then this short track that basically gives me all the feels whenever I listen to it.

What about the Halo games? Halo 3 has to be my favourite music wise, I just loved the whole heroic, finishing the fight theme they had going on with the pianos. I do love Marty's work, also in Destiny, but I have to say Halo 4 had a stellar soundtrack and is close to topping 3 and now H5 is just as good. I find myself loving the tracks composed by Kazuma Jinnouchi that much more with each listen.
Spoiler: show

Though I will save the video games probably for the VG music thread that was brought back via thread necromancy haha
I'm a big fan of James Horner and honestly was so shocked when he passed away, and also rather infuriated how little "press" there was about it, I didn't even know til a good month after when there was a brief tribute saying "It's been a month since composer James Horner passed away". He has undoubtly composed some of my favourite soundtracks to some of my favourite films even if it largely came under criticism.
Spoiler: show
Oh man there are just so many I could go on forever, Jumanji, Enemy at the Gates, An American Tail, Mighty Joe Young, Avatar, The Amazing Spiderman. Many of his works sound similar but oh my god they are amazing.

I also adore John Powell who again has worked on a lot of films I adore.
Spoiler: show

Same can be said for David Newman
Spoiler: show

Klaus Bedalt
Spoiler: show

James Newton Howard
Spoiler: show

Just ugh.... music man, and that doesn't even scratch the surface, not to mention the various orchestral versions of tracks or suites.

I'm going to see Hans Zimmer in April and I am so excited beyond relief.

I truly enjoy game soundtracks. But the following two are remixes that have stood out in my library.

First, pokemon. Pokemon Reorchestrated is a magnificent collection of Red and Blue nostalgia.

And also my favorite music of melancholy. Such great collection of haunting pieces in Theophany's "Time's End", remix of Majora's Mask

I also like Alan Silvestri, and (I'm not gonna lie here) Alan Menkin for much of his Disney work.

Why would you have to lie Kal, Alan Menken is dope! Though I may be biased as I am a huge Disney fan, but I just love his work on all the soundtracks and some are them are actually my favourite film soundtracks.

I rewatched Malcolm X last night. No matter what Spike Lee film I watch, the score/soundtrack is always on point. Even if the moment is written wrong, the music makes up for it. I have the same feeling towards Tarantino, but I digress.

I actually also think he's one of my favourites because not only does he compose the scores of his films but he also writes a lot of the songs and lyrics or works with other musicians to do so.

So you've probably know all the big numbers such as these
Spoiler: show

He also tends to adapt a lot of his scores to fit Broadway Musical counterparts to the films.

I'm a sucker for orchestral music in games, my possession of all Halo soundtracks would be a testament to that.

Another game series that has absolutely fantastic music is the Souls series, by From Software. Their musical pieces differ from Halos soundtrack as they're meant to capture the essence of a singular boss fight, a singular moment.

My first favorite comes from the most recent game of theirs, Bloodborne.

Gerhman, The First Hunter

From Dark Souls 2
