Re: And what are you reading now?

School's not letting me read as much as I have been in the summer, but I'm still loving A Clash of Kings.

Icebird, how do you like The Wheel of Time now that you're so far into the series? I've heard it's one of the best, but it also deteriorates as the books go on.

And now that Reach has come out, I feel like making a run through all of the Halo books.
I buy books like some people buy shoes.

I was really tiring out on the Wheel of Time books... seemed like he let some plot lines go longer than they should have. Plus there's probably over a hundred semi-important characters to try to keep up with. AND some of the characters names are very similar to others.

The Gathering Storm is REALLY good though, (I have about 300 pages to go). Seems like Brandon Sanderson was able to inject a little bit of life into the book. It picks up right where Robert Jordan was when he died. It still is the same series. It just seems to read easier.

It's been a couple years since I've read A Song of Ice and Fire now... I recall Clash of Kings was good. The 3rd one was my favorite though. I intend to reread Game of Thrones before the HBO show premieres next spring.

Just finished the second! It was quite good, and I'm very excite for the rest of this series.

Who's your favourite character? I like Jon Snow and Tyrion. His wit never fails to amuse me.

Also, check out some awesomesauce from the making of the HBO series.

Did anybody re-read (or read for the first time) any new books to prepare for Reach? Share your thoughts, we want to hear them!

I agree Jon Snow & Tyrion are incredible characters. For me, Dany, Samwell Tarly, Jamie Lannister, & Robb Stark also stand out. In book 3 you'll read Tyrion at his best! I think he's probably my single favorite character in the series.

I've yet to read any of the Halo books. I believe I will read them eventually.

Bit of a necro here, wanted to ask if anyone was a Darren Shan fan.
I am, and I really want to see if anyone agrees with me on The Thin Executioner and Hell's Heroes.

Not a necro! I intend to keep this thread thriving. :D

Pull up a big comfy chair, settle down by the fireplace, and tell us about Darren Shan. I've never heard of him; what genre does he write?

Ooh, comfy.
He's an Irish writer, writes horror(not really conventional horror, just a bit of gore and dark tones) it's sort of hard to explain.

He has two massive series', The Demonata and The Darren Shan series. I'd recommend them to anyone. He also brought out a couple of standalone books.

If you see the Darren Shan series in the library, check them out. His writing isn't particularly elaborate, but the plots he writes develop brilliantly and both series' had awesome endings.

I also really like the characters he uses. They develop a lot, have quite a bit of depth and most of them are likable in some way or other.

And he's Irish!
Oh, and speaking of Irish writers, check out Derek Landy and the Skulduggery Pleasant books(and Eoin Colfer, if you haven't already, shame on you).

I think Icebird was asking EuroFox. I think he either finished or is almost finished GRRM's series. He was raving about the series last week when I talked to him.

Whoops! Brain fart... Yeah, that question was intended for EuroFox

It is an incredible series, possibly one of the best works of fiction I've ever read.

Welcome to the club, Dawg.

I finished the Liveship Trader series by Robin Hobb recently.

I really enjoyed the multiple perspectives Hobb used in the story. It was interesting to see the plot from so many different character perspectives.

I'm reading Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin now.

Well, right now I'm reading "Mistborn" by Brandon Sanderson. It's really good so far. It has the most interesting magic system i have ever read about.

But this post is really about "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. It's the first book of the "Kingkiller Chronicles", which i think is gonna be a trilogy. Only the first 2 books are out so far. The book is Fantasy, so there are swords and a little magic and stuff.

The series is about a super famous guy, who did a lot of legend worthy things when he was younger. And for some reason that we don't know yet, he was trying to run away from his past. So the books are pretty much him telling his story, with a few short sections of things that happen in the "real world".

I recommend this book to everyone! I'm not quite sure, but I think it may be my favourite book. I have to re-read it and some other books to see if it actually is.

Edit: forgot to mention that the writing is amazing. Patrick Rothfuss is like Morgan Freeman. He can write about anything, and you'll enjoy reading it.
