And what are you reading now?

Sat Aug 14, 2010 11:34 pm

I wanted to get a look at what the rest of the community is reading, and what books they're into. I'm a huge book fan/collector, and reading is probably my most favourite pastime. ::flex::

Why don't you let us know what you're reading, and give us a short blurb of what you think of the book so far.

I'm currently reading Confessor, the 11th and last book in Terry Goodkind's A Sword of Truth series. I love this series to death. It's long, but fantasy is my favourite genre, and I got immediately drawn into this world, and fell in love with the characters. The action is fast-paced, and you really get to know the main characters and their little quirks.

I know a certain someone who will comment more on this series, but I highly recommend it, so start reading the first book, Wizard's First Rule, right away!

Well right now I'm finising up re-reading the entire Harry Potter series for the third time. I seem to have an ungodly obsession with these books... recently I have purchased and read several supplementary books that are about the HP series... meaning that I believe them to be much more than a children's book. So yeah... ::geek:: ::geek:: ::geek::

But I have also recently started reading Catch-22, mainly because some of my friends from school read it and liked it. So I figured it would be an interesting read... When I started reading it, I was impressed by the character development, but a passage that I read early on alsp got me really intrigued:

"There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, that specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane, he had to fly them. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of the clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle."

Idk... I guess I just think it's a cool concept, I look forward to finishing this book.

Right now I'm in a bit of a book-reading phase. My dad was a big reader back in the day, and he has a sizeable collection that I've been going through, so I have a rather full plate of books at the moment . Some that I plan to read soom are Islands in the Stream (Hemingway), Siddartha (Hesse), Steppenwolf (Hesse), and Divine Comedy (Dante).

H3WM bookclub anyone? :P

As a little kid I used to read non-stop every hour i was awake, and i won all sorts of awards from the school system for it, unfortunatly/fortunatly I discovered video games around 6th grade and books became obsolete... I havnt read a new book outside of a requirement for a class in about 2yrs :( I am still a huge fan of the Eragon series and Ive been patiently awaiting the arrival of the fourth and final book of the series and I make sure to read the first three at least once a year, cuase their awesome. i still dont know if bookworm>>>>>>Gamer was a good or bad thing.....
If you think we're a rolling double kill.. come get it.

Assembly Language Step-by-Step: Programming with Linux (Third Edition) by Jeff Duntemann

It's not as boring as it sounds, so far anyway (I've only read a few chapters); it seems just as much a book on programming as it is a really well written (and detailed) explanation of exactly what the PCs of today are and just how they do what they do on a binary level. Which is why I bought it in the first place, I think it's fascinating stuff.

Last fictional book I finished was The Sound Of Waves by Yukio Mishima, which I quite liked. But that was far too long ago. Been meaning to finish reading Spring Snow ever since then (started reading it almost immediately after), but never really take the time to. ::side::

Hope you have patience.. when I read it many years ago, I tried more than twice, but just could'nt finish it. I remember laughing at the part about "The Syndicate" tho, I think you'll like that. :)

an analysis of the french situation, fascianating book about lifestyle, politics and patriotism, makes me wish i lived there, if your up for a good book and will put your racism aside the way the french do things may not be perfect, but its a hell of a lot better than here.

I'm currently reading Naked Empire, the 8st book in the Sword of Truth series. (same series euromofox is reading)
It is quite the awesome.

Other than Harry Potter I haven't even heard of the books you guys said except for euromofox. I'm actually reading the same series as him, but I'm only on the 8rd book, Naked Empire.

Some more fantasy series that are super epic are The Liveship Traders, Farseer Trilogy, and Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb. My neighbours just woke up. All 3 series take place in the same world. The characterization in these books is the best I have ever seen. I can't wait to finish sword of truth, and then 3 other series, 2 also by Robin Hobb, and A Song of Ice and Fire, so that I can read these books again.
When I grow up to be a Waterfall, I'm gonna wear a helmet.

I've read quite a lot of books, but then gaming and internet got my attention. My favourite books would have to be those of a Norwegian author, Hans Fredrik Follestad. The books are called (and i translate) The Four And Him Who Makes Bad Worse. Three books; The Beginning, The Continuation and The End.
so, the books are about a moose, a raccoon, a ferret and a panda in their early twenties who have to save the world from an evil wizard-ish being (they are liek the chosen ones lul), so they get magical training in Nepal. Its pretty much sick and twisted humour, thats why I love these books. For instance, some of the minions of this evil wizard-ish being have metal chickens who ram into stuff so fast they break the soundbarrier. The only way to stop them is with armored baseballbats and awesome reflexes! ::lol::

I can't describe the actual genre of the books i read. But the best way i use to describe them is the Dan Brown type books. I read both Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons and loved them. Followed them up with the other Dan Brown books. Then found out to my delight that lots of other authors wrote books under the same genre. Which basically consists of the novel being set in the present, containing myths and such from the past that are coming into new light. Recent books i read of this genre include The Last Templar and Seven Ancient Wonders. Currently I'm reading The Alexander Cipher

Like most people, I've read (and reread) both LOTR and HP series over and over. But one of the best fantasy series I've read is Stephen King's The Dark Tower

Oh, and when i was younger the Redwall series was the best thing ever. I'm currently trying to get hold of his new books so i can read them too ::panic::

I am a huge redwall fan as well. Have read almost every single redwall book in existence at least 2-3 times. Right now, I'm into the Warhammer 40k series, cause I got bored with fantasy and switched to sci-fi. mmm.... makes me wonder if their will be a couple new halo books after reach comes out.

ah, hehe, i read them in norwegian, so the closest translation i could think of was "revolverman" :p But now that you mention it, Gunslinger sounds more familiar!

Right now I'm reading through Tom Holt's The Portable Door right now.
His books are completely crazy.

I have to agree that Robin Hobb is an excellent writer.

I'm currently reading The White Lioness by Henning Mankell. It's sort of a detective thriller story, originally written in Swedish but translated into English. It's good because while most of it is based in Sweden, some of it is set in South Africa at the time Nelson Mandella was released from prison, and it's an interesting insight into the way black people were treated in South Africa at the time.
